Electronic Media and the Arts

As the integration of technology has become more common in arts organizations, dance companies now find themselves impacted by media policy. Whether it's the changing policy around broadband spectrum, which can impact a dance company's usage of wireless microphones (for singers, instrumentalists, or backstage staff), or the importance of keeping the internet a competitive space where online content has the potential to reach the same audiences as large media companies, it's increasingly more important to stay abreast of policies at the Federal Communications Commission.

White Space

To implement the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012, the FCC issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that included plans to transition spectrum from TV broadcasting to wireless broadband through spectrum auction. Already, many theaters and performing arts venues were required to purchase new equipment when they were forced to evacuate the section of the spectrum where they had been operating.

What's At Stake

It is important to continue to protect cultural organizations from increased equipment expenses and to ensure that the FCC protects the existing services, including wireless microphones for performers, and performing arts venues, from interference.

Net Neutrality

What's At Stake

The Internet must remain a place where users can learn, express themselves, innovate, and build a business. It is important that the Internet remain accessible to all users, including artists. Internet Service Providers should not be allowed to discriminate against lawful online content based on business or other preferences.
