Washington, DC – Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance and San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee announce that the 2012 Mayor Award will go to the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival. The award will be presented by the mayor during the 2012 Honors Celebration on Thurs., June 28, 2012 during the Dance/USA Annual Conference being held June 27–30 in San Francisco, CA.

“Diversity in dance is a key theme in this year’s conference. The San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival embodies the concept in its presentation of culturally diverse dance forms, creating one of the world’s most vibrant ethnic dance communities. We are thrilled to honor them during the Dance/USA Honor Celebration,” said Amy Fitterer, Dance/USA’s Executive Director.

The largest and most comprehensive event of its kind in North America, the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival annually presents the diverse ethnic dance companies and cultural traditions of the Bay Area. During its rich, 34-year history, the Festival has celebrated and fostered appreciation for the distinct communities in the Bay Area and Northern California, through its performance season of dance styles that have included traditional classical dance, sacred dance genres, vernacular dance forms, social dance and folk dance presentations. Since its inception, the

Festival has presented over 600 dance companies from over 100 difference genres and has reached hundreds of thousands of audience members, providing outstanding opportunities to artists who seek to present the dance expressions of their cultural and ethnic heritages.

“There is no other dance community in the world with the cultural diversity, artistic excellence, and vibrancy of the San Francisco Bay Area’s. We currently serve as the hub for over 450 Bay Area dance companies who are networked with many thousands of dancers and musicians all over the world. We are honored to receive the 2012 Mayor’s Award and to bring national attention to our dynamic dance community,” said San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival Executive Director Julie Mushet.
