Ruth Birnberg has served as the executive director of the Boston Dance Alliance, the area’s largest service organization, for three years. During this time she has overseen the launching of numerous new programs, including fiscal sponsorship, the creation of a brand new portable sprung dance floor that provides dancers with the means to bring dance to previously inaccessible sites, joint marketing programs, professional development workshops and an increase in membership of 70%. Prior to taking on this role, Birnberg was a dancer, choreographer, director of her own dance company, and co-founder of Green Street Studios, Cambridge MA, that houses studios and a black box theatre. After leaving the active dance world, Birnberg went back to school to earn an M.B.A. She then worked as an independent consultant before returning to focus solely on dance. Birnberg is on the steering committee for Boston’s Arts Services Coalition, is chair of Dance/USA Service Organizations Council, and serves on the board of Dance/USA.
