National Initiative to Preserve America's Dance

Since 1993 the National Initiative to Preserve America's Dance has funded more than 50 projects to preserve and document dance in America. Created in response to a National Endowment for the Arts study warning of dance's imperiled legacy, The Pew Charitable Trusts awarded a grant to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to create NIPAD. Since that time, the Trusts have awarded 2 more grants for this program, including support in 2000 to move the program to Dance/USA as Andrea Snyder became executive director.

The program has now reached the end of its generous funding from the Trusts. No more grants will be awarded for dance documentation and preservation work. We encourage those interested in doing this work to contact the National Endowment for the Arts and/or the Dance Heritage Coalition for information on grant programs and other support to continue this good work.

The NIPAD is a program of Dance/USA, funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts.

NIPAD Meetings in Miami, FL: June 2002

The National Initiative to Preserve America's Dance brought together 53 participants in meetings focused on dance documentation and preservation. An extraordinary gathering of professionals in the dance field, most of whom had projects funded by NIPAD, the 2 days brought a wealth of information for sharing and brainstorming.

George Bain, NIPAD grantee from Ohio University, published a synopsis of the meetings in the Society of American Archivists Performing Arts Roundtable August 2002 newletter.
