2002 Grantee Profile: Charya Cheam Burt
The Magic Peacocks

Charya Cheam Burt staged a traditional dance work based on a Cambodian folk dance, and worked extensively with composer Alexis Alrich to fuse Western instrumentation with Cambodian melodies. The piece was performed at Elsie Allen High School in Santa Rosa, California in the summer of 2002.

Charya Cheam Burt's Remarks

"Working on this project has helped me to become more aware of the complexities of collaborative work. Listening to different points of view and establishing clear communication between the artists has allowed me to have a positive working experience.... I was lucky enough to find wonderful artists who are talented, committed and very interested in working on the project. I hope to have more opportunities to work with them again in the near future.

"In order to keep developing and expanding my professional artistic skills, it is important for me to find different ways to create more works. The DanceMaker Grant gave me the opportunity to expand my own artistic goals as well as to keep Cambodian dance traditions alive. Producing something so new and different was very exciting. It is important that I have the opportunity to bring this new work to the general public.

"... Working on The Magic Peacocks has been the highlight of my dance career. It not only afforded me the chance to work collaboratively with other talented artists, but also has allowed me the chance to take my knowledge of traditional Cambodian dance to a new level. Furthermore, I have a new sense of discovery for my art, one that will hopefully propel me to work on more new projects, and I have gained more confidence in what I do as a choreographer. I believe that to remain a vital and important part of contemporary Cambodian culture and to renew interest in traditional Cambodian art forms, it is important to allow the art to evolve. The DanceMaker Grant has allowed me to do just that."
