PRESS RELEASE: Dance/USA Welcomes Three Officers, Two Council Chairs, and Six New Members to its 2013-2014 Board of Trustees

Washington, DC – Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance, is pleased to announce its 2013-2014 Board of Trustees, featuring three new Executive Committee Members and two new Council Chairs. A total of eight new members will be joining the Board of Trustees. The start date for the 2013-2014 Board of Trustees’ term was July 1, 2013. 

Serving as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees is Cecil C. Conner, Jr., (managing director emeritus, Houston Ballet, Houston, TX). Barry Hughson (executive director, Boston Ballet, Boston, MA) is a new Vice Chair, and Pamela Robinson (chief financial officer, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, New York, NY) is the new Treasurer. Officers of the Board of Trustees are elected by the Trustees Committee and serve for two years. 

Dance/USA’s membership elected two new Council Chairs for a one year term: Lucy Bowen McCauley (artistic director, Bowen McCauley Dance, Arlington, VA) and Andrea Lodico Welshons (executive director, Keigwin + Company, New York, NY). McCauley is a Chair of one of the Artistic Directors’ Councils and Welshons is a Chair of one of the Managers’ Councils.

The Board of Trustees nominated six new members to serve a three year term: Mark Baird (program director, The LEAP Program, New York, NY; Las Vegas, NV; San Francisco, CA), Gabriela Poler-Buzali (executive director, José Limón Dance Company, New York, NY), Cookie Ruiz (executive director, Ballet Austin, Austin, TX), Linda Shelton (executive director, The Joyce Theater, New York, NY), David Shimotakahara (artistic director, Groundworks Dancetheater, Cleveland, OH), and Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (founding artistic director, Urban Bush Women, Brooklyn, NY).  

“Our Trustees serve the field of dance and represent a diverse dance constituency across the U.S.,” commented Dance/USA Executive Director Amy Fitterer. “The new Officers, Chairs, and Trustees are leaders in the field, representing various dance genres, organizations, and geographic regions.”

“I am honored to serve the Dance/USA community,” commented Board of Trustees Chair Conner. “I would like to help move the organization forward and encourage the membership to be responsive to current economic, demographic, and participation realities.”  

The Dance/USA Board of Trustees is committed to the greater good of the national professional dance field.  The guiding responsibility of the Board is to provide sound leadership and guidance that addresses the field as a whole.
