Morning Movement with Lucy McCauley Bowen
Friday, June 18, 7:30-8:15am
Start your morning with this slow-paced class that increases elasticity in the muscles and freedom in the joints. Taught in a proper order, each exercise flows into the next while incorporating deep breathing to help de-stress both the mind and body. The class emphasizes proper alignment and the interdependence of good posture and flexibility.
Lucy Bowen McCauley, dancer, choreographer, Artistic Director, and energetic visionary behind Bowen McCauley Dance (BMD), has created over 60 dance works ranging from lyrical ballets to highly physical contemporary pieces set to muscular rock music. Her 14 year old critically acclaimed contemporary company is noted for it partnering of classically trained dancers with a diverse selection of musical artists. McCauley has emerged as a most interesting and popular choreographer, exploring an astonishing range of genres and styles with consistent skill, intelligence and audacity. In her desire to bring the joy and beauty of dance to new participants, McCauley has developed groundbreaking outreach programs that bring professional dance to underserved communities including children with disabilities and adults with Parkinson Disease. In October 2008, Washingtonian named McCauley among those “who have helped transform Washington into one of the nation’s liveliest centers for the performing arts.”
McCauley has received awards for her own and BMD’s impact on the arts and community service through dance from Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Arlington Commission for the Arts, AAUW, Arlington’s Gazette Newspaper, and the Arlington Chamber of Commerce.
Over the years, McCauley has taught at George Washington University and The Washington Ballet, and has been a guest teacher at ABT, the Orlando Ballet, The Kennedy Center, Georgetown University, and the Escuela Superior de Musica y Danza in Monterrey, Mexico. She is currently on the faculty at Maryland Youth Ballet and Studio Body Logic.
Besides her dancing and choreography, McCauley has pioneered a unique stretch technique, trademarked as Bowen McCauley Stretch, which has been featured in USA Today, Dance Teacher, and the Washington Post. Years ago in New York, McCauley, who was a student, protégée, model and collaborator of renowned exercise physiologist, Jean Paul Mustone, used her dancer’s body to help Mustone develop a technique specifically suited to dancers’ needs and flexibility. Bowen McCauley Stretch originated from this early work and now boasts several other trained teachers and hundreds of students and followers, many of whom carry stretch DVD’s with McCauley’s vocal instruction with them when they travel. For three years, 2003-2006, McCauley used her stretch technique as coach for USA Gymnastics, working with Olympic notables, Dominique Dawes, Courtney Kupets, and Elise Ray, among others.
