This is the first convening of our Roundtable and it follows the opening plenary of the convention on the preceding evening.
David Mallette, Chair, Board of Trustees, Andrea Snyder, Executive Director, and representatives of the conference hosts Pittsburgh Dance Alliance and Pittsburgh Ballet Theater give welcoming comments and introduce the observers from other fields who will partake of the sessions and share their thoughts and observations about the next stage for dance at the summarizing plenary on Friday:
- Stan Davis is an independent author and speaker based in Boston as well as a research fellow at the Ernst & Young Center for Business Innovation in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Davis’ eight influential books include the best-selling Future Perfect and he is the recipient of Tom Peters’ “Book of the Decade” Award. He gave the keynote address at Dance/USA’s 1994 Roundtable.
- John Kreidler is Executive Director of Cultural Initiatives Silicon Valley, an organization formed to assist the cultural development of Silicon Valley. John served 19 years with the San Francisco Foundation as the top Program Officer for the Arts and one year as Acting Director. He also served as Director of Administration for the San Francisco Art Institute and headed the Alameda County Neighborhood Arts Program.
- Constant Meijers (Leiden, 1945) started his journalistic career with the legendary Dutch underground magazine Aloha. In 1972 he was invited to join the rock magazine Oor as editor-in-chief. In his ten-year stint with this magazine, Meijers was responsible for introducing the pop weekly Hitkrant and The First Dutch Pop Encyclopedia. In 1982, Meijers switched to radio and television and made several program series on new media developments and documentary films on cultural subjects. In the early nineties, he was asked, on behalf of the seven big theatre companies in The Netherlands, to develop a magazine to promote Dutch theatre. In 1997, he started to present different radio programs on art, culture and books. One year later, he took up editing TheaterMaker, now shortened to TM, the Dutch magazine for the performing arts.
- Jane L. Polin brings more than twenty years of innovative leadership experience within the nonprofit and private sectors in developing and investing philanthropic resources. Now a philanthropic advisor in the arts, education, and public policy, she recently created Acts of Achievement: The Role of Performing Arts Centers in Education for the Dana Foundation, and has completed diverse projects for other national clients, including the American Music Center/Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; Bennington College/Getty Trust; Chorus America; Kenan Institute for the Arts; and Young Audiences. Previously with the GE Fund, Ms. Polin led several grant programs and administration, and designed award-winning arts education initiatives, including Champions of Change: The Impact of the Arts on Learning and Gaining the Arts Advantage: Lessons from School Districts That Value Arts Education.
Two reflectors from the field, British choreographer and artistic director Matthew Bourne and Urban Bush Women artistic director Jawole Willa Jo Zollar will start the exploration of “Taking Dance to the Next Stage” with their personal perspectives.
