California-Directed Funding Expands Audience Engagement Pilot
Dance/USA Receives $400k Grant from the James Irvine Foundation for California Component of National Audience Engagement Initiative.

Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance, announced today that it has received a $400,000 grant from The James Irvine Foundation targeted for the California component of Engaging Dance Audiences (EDA), the first national funding program and related study of audience engagement practices focused specifically on the art form of dance. This support is all the more critical today, as arts organizations must develop new strategies to navigate our Nation’s new economic realities.

Through the EDA initiative, a total of $1.9 million is now available for project activity and research. "We are pleased to partner with Dance/USA and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation on this initiative. We hope it will enable dance organizations to reach new audiences through a broad array of delivery systems beyond traditional performances. This will lead to greater accessibility and interest in effective audience engagement practices for dance," said John McGuirk, Arts Program Director at The James Irvine Foundation.

EDA Update: Defining "Audience Engagement"

As part of the planning for Engaging Dance Audiences (EDA) project, Dance/USA surveyed a sample of our member dance companies and presenters to gather information on the kinds of audience engagement activities currently taking place and to learn how the interviewees define audience engagement. Great care was given to insure that there was a representative sample of the national dance field based on genre, budget size, and geography of the interviewees. A President's Planning Fund grant from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation made these interviews possible.

A compilation of the findings from the 25 interviews is available for members in a PDF document. The document also includes the working definition of "audience engagement" and the interview protocol. This document is the first piece of research to come out of EDA. It our hope that the learning that comes from EDA will enable the field to continue engaging audiences and providing tools to track the impact of engagement activities.

EDA is funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the James Irvine Foundation.

New Medical Finds Result in Preventive Health Screen to Help Professional Dancers Avoid Injury

From “The Red Shoes” to “Dancing with the Stars,” the injured dancer can provide a dramatic moment. In truth, injury can mean the end of a promising career built on years of dedication and training. But what if injuries might be predicted, or even prevented? Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance announces a standardized DANCER HEALTH SCREENING PROTOCOL for all dance companies that should help prevent injuries and bring overall better health to professional dancers. The protocol was developed by the Dance/USA Task Force on Dancer Health, composed of the medical personnel from member companies of Dance/USA.

Artist Corps and National Service

Congressman Joe Crowley (D-NY) has drafted an amendment to the GIVE Act (H.R. 1388) which includes the proposal for an Artists Corps within the Corporation for National and Community Service. The amendment in the House bill is phrased as follows: A musician and artist corps program that trains and deploys skilled musicians and artists to promote greater community unity through the use of music and arts education and engagement through work in low income communities, education, healthcare and therapeutic settings, and other work in the public domain with citizens of all ages.

The Senate version of the national service legislation goes to mark-up today. An amendment that addresses an artist corps has not yet been announced in the Senate legislation. Dance/USA is watching this legislation closely. Stay Tuned.
