Born and raised in New Mexico, Mr. Maldonado relocated to the East Coast to attend the University of Rochester (NY). He started his career in not-for-profit administration while in Rochester, serving as a development officer with Neighborhood Housing Services, Hillside Children’s Center and Community Health Network. In 1992, Mr. Maldonado came to NYC to work with community and HIV/AIDS advocacy groups in fundraising and special event production. It was during the planning of a benefit that incorporated dance that he met a choreographer and was introduced to dance. After this meeting of fate, Mr. Maldonado turned his full focus to working with choreographers and dance companies. He was the development director for Circum-Arts Foundation from 1994-98 and The Parsons Dance Company from 1998-2000. In 2001, he founded Zia Artists, a management and booking agency for dance artists. In 2003, he founded Gotham Arts Exchange, a not-for-profit arts organization created to provide administrative, management, fundraising, insurance, booking and fiscal sponsorship services for individual dance artists and dance companies. Through Gotham Arts he has also ventured into the role of producer and presenter by producing annual performances: Dance (Dans) at NYU/Tisch School of the Arts, Dance Gotham at Symphony Space, and in 2008 a new two-week festival, SummerDANZ at Dance Theater Workshop.
