Our Greening Efforts Pay Off
2009 Annual Conference

You liked us being "green"! Evaluation results from attendees show that our effort to reduce paper and waste were appreciated. It saved Dance/USA thousands of dollars and we contributed to the Green Meetings Industry Council’s challenge to divert, recycle, or compost a million tons of trash between Earth Day (April 22), and the end of 2009. Interestingly, we also ended up with lots of "green" followers on Twitter! Check out @greenbizdaily, @denversolarguy, and @discoveryfuel for more tips on keeping it "green".

The Nation’s Report Card on Arts Education (the National Assessment of Education Progress in the Arts 2008)

The National Assessment Governing Board has released the first NAEP arts assessment since 1997 of eighth grade students. Although dance and theater were not assessed due to a lack of systemic instruction in either discipline, the results noted that while offerings of art and music have remained steady, racial/ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic gaps exist in student achievement.

Government Affairs Update

Congress has fully stepped into the appropriations process with the goal of passing all twelve federal appropriations bills before the August recess. As you know, President Obama has proposed a $6 million increase to the National Endowment for the Arts, which would bring the agency to $161 million for FY10. The House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior has proposed an increase of $15 million for a total amount of $170 million for FY10. The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior supports Obama’s proposal with the $6 million increase.

Stay tuned for upcoming Action Alerts on NEA funding for FY10 from the Performing Arts Alliance.
