Government Affairs Update

House Passes $15 Million Increase to National Endowment for the Arts

On Friday, June 26, the House of Representatives approved a $15 million increase to the NEA. If passed by Congress and signed by President Obama, this increase would bring the NEA’s FY10 budget to $170 million, the highest funding level since FY 1992. The Senate Appropriation Subcommittee on the Interior has approved a more modest increase of $6 million to the federal arts agency.

National Service Caucus Meet with Arts Advocates

For the first time ever, arts advocates have met with staff of the Congressional National Service Caucus. The goal of the meeting was to inform the national service caucus of how the arts have served as long time partners with communities through volunteer activities. Meeting attendees also discussed the expanded role of the arts in the Serve America Act and ways to raise awareness around the role of the arts in national service programs. An ad-hoc working group of national arts advocates has been formed to advocate for the arts and national service. For more information, please contact Amy Fitterer, director of government affairs, at afitterer@danceusa.org

A.R.T.S. Act Reintroduced in the Senate

Today, the A.R.T.S. Act (Arts Require Timely Service Act) was reintroduced in the Senate by Senators Kerry (D-MA), Hatch (R-UT) and Schumer (D-NY). The bill was already reintroduced in the House on March 30. Dance/USA is working closely with the Performing Arts Alliance to improve the visa process for foreign guest artists and is tracking this legislation closely.
