Let Dance/USA Cover Your Registration for Arts Advocacy Day 2009 in Washington DC
Dance/USA is pleased to offer a limited number of complimentary registrations to our organizational members for Arts Advocacy Day in Washington, DC March 30-31, 2009. Each year, this two-day event unites hundreds of artists, administrators, advocates and students from around the country to discuss, explore and ultimately take action in support of federal arts policy. Facilitated by Americans for the Arts and co-sponsored by almost one hundred national organizations including Dance/USA, Arts Advocacy Day empowers arts advocates and brings their voices to the halls of Congress each year. On day one, learn how to advocate and influence decision makers, learn the legislative status of the most important arts issues, and attend the Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy featuring Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Wynton Marsalis. On day two, take action and let your voice be heard when you visit your members of congress to make the case for the arts and arts education. For more information, please visit http://danceusa.org/artsadvocacyday.
The registrations will be made available beginning at noon EST on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 and will close at 5pm EST on Friday, March 13, 2009. For Dance Troupes, Theaters, a Leg up

'In answer to President Barack Obama's call to service," says Jamie Merwin, artistic director of Olive Dance Theatre, "we are making this week's entire run at the Wilma Theater free to the public. "But," she added, "donations at the door are certainly hoped for."
Difficult times are nothing new for local dance companies, but things were just made a bit easier by a new Dance/USA Philadelphia program that will subsidize theater rentals for groups seeking good performance spaces.
"This new program also provides a service to the venues, allowing dance companies to rent them when theaters might otherwise be dark," said Dance/USA Philadelphia director Lois Welk. "But more importantly, it will give our local companies greater visibility and broaden their audiences.
The Theater Rental Subsidy Program is a new initiative of Dance/USA Philadelphia and is made possible with support from the William Penn Foundation. For more information about Dance/USA Philadelphia go to www.danceusaphiladelphia.org.
Arts in the Economic Stimulus Package
Since December, Dance/USA has been actively collaborating with members of the Cultural Advocacy Group to develop proposals for the arts in the economic stimulus package. The Cultural Advocacy Group includes a broad array of national arts service organizations including all members of the Performing Arts Alliance, Americans for the Arts, the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, American Association of Museums, Association of Art Museum Directors, the National Humanities Alliance and many more organizations.
We are excited to announce that the House bill addresses many of the coalition’s proposals including a $50 million increase to the National Endowment for the Arts (above annual appropriations). Every year, nonprofit arts organizations and their audiences generate $166.2 billion in economic activity, support 5.7 million jobs, and return nearly $30 billion in government revenue. Plus, every $1 billion in spending by these organizations – and their audiences – results in almost 70,000 full-time-equivalent jobs (Source: Americans for the Arts).
TAKE ACTION NOW! Encourage Congress to pass a stimulus bill that includes the arts, a vital economic engine in our communities! To send a letter to your members of Congress, visit the Performing Arts Alliance ACTION CENTER.
