Access Dance/USA Scholarship Applications Are Now Available

Dance/USA is pleased to announce the fourth round of Access Dance/USA, a scholarship program designed to subsidize attendance to the Dance/USA Annual Conference for dance administrators, dance artists, and independent choreographers. This year, Access Dance/USA scholarships will be awarded to fourteen members from the New York City community to attend the Dance/USA Annual Conference, June 3-6, 2009 in Houston, Texas. Scholarships are available for both member and non-member first-time attendees and are intended to help defray the costs of conference registration, transportation to Houston, and hotel and dining expenses during the conference. For more information and to download the scholarship application, please visit http://danceusa.org/accessdanceusa. Applications must be received by March 20, 2009. Funding for these scholarships was made possible by Dance/NYC through a grant by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Funding Guidelines Now Available for Engaging Dance Audiences

Engaging Dance Audiences (EDA) is a $1.5 million pilot program that enables Dance/USA to learn methods of engaging audiences, learn from peers, and share the learning nationally. EDA consists of four components that are designed to expand the theory and practice of audience engagement. Three of the components involve direct support to Dance/USA members and are outlined here. The fourth component involves field-wide research on dance audiences. To administer EDA, Dance/USA has engaged Callahan Consulting for the Arts to manage its grant making component, and WolfBrown to lead its audience research component. Engaging Dance Audiences is made possible with generous support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Government Affairs Update

ARTS IN THE ECONOMIC STIMULUS BILL
Last week, the House of Representatives passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Bill (ARRP) of 2009 which includes $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts (above annual appropriations). According to the House bill language, the $50 million is to be allocated as follows: 40% to state arts agencies and regional arts organizations through formula grants and 60% through direct grants “to fund arts projects and activities which preserve jobs in the non-profit arts sector threatened by declines in philanthropic and other support during the current economic downturn.”

The Senate proposed their own version of an economic stimulus package that does not include funds for the NEA. The House and Senate will most likely meet in conference to finalize one stimulus bill for President Barack Obama to sign. There is still hope for the NEA to be included in the final bill presented to the President.

If you have not already done so, TAKE ACTION NOW and ask your legislators to support the $50 million for the NEA. You can also call your Senator’s DC office and ask them to support the American Recovery and Reinvestment Bill of 2009 that included funding for the NEA. The arts are a powerful economic engine. Nonprofit arts organizations and their audiences generate $166.2 billion in economic activity every year, support 5.7 million jobs, and return nearly $30 billion in annual government revenue. The arts are part of the solution!

GRASSROOTS ARTS ADVOCACY – WHAT YOU CAN DO
You can take action on a daily basis in support of the arts. The NEA funding in the House bill is receiving a lot of media attention and we need your help to inform the public on why the arts are a logical inclusion in an economic stimulus package. Email your friends, family and co-workers with the economic numbers listed above and forward them the NEA Statement on the Arts and the Economic Stimulus Package. You can also post these economic numbers on your Facebook page, on your organization’s website and make announcements at the beginning of your performances. You can write an editorial in your local paper. The general public needs to know the economic value of the arts and how our field can help during these difficult economic times. Click here for a comprehensive list of talking points in support of the arts.
