National Statistics

As of September 2006, there are 76 dance companies* in America with operating budgets of $1 million or more.
- 58 of these are ballet companies.
- 18 of these are modern/contemporary companies.
- 35 of these are currently members of Dance/USA.

Million-dollar-plus dance companies are widely dispersed across America. These 76 companies are located in a total of 51 cities.
- Only 6 cities have more than one of the million-plus dance companies.
- New York City has the most, with 15; San Francisco/San Jose Bay Area is next with 6 and greater Washington DC has 4.
- Chicago, Philadelphia and Denver each have 2.
- 45 other cities have just 1 million-plus company each.

The majority of these larger companies, however, are located among the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the nation.
- 43 of the 76 companies (57%) are located among 18 of the 25 largest metropolitan areas.
- The 7 major metropolitan areas that lack a million-plus dance company are Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Saint Louis and Tampa/Clearwater.

This means that 33 cities NOT among the largest in the nation each have a million-plus dance company. Again, this demonstrates that dance is broadly dispersed.
- The largest company outside of the 25 biggest metro areas is Ballet West in Salt Lake City (35th largest metropolitan area).
- The smallest community to include a million-plus company is Eugene, OR (123rd largest metropolitan area) which houses the Eugene Ballet.
- A case can be made that Santa Fe (205th) is second home to the Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, which is physically housed in Aspen, CO.

Over half of the 52 states (including DC and Puerto Rico) house million-plus dance companies.
- 32 states, districts or territories have million-plus companies while 20 do not.
- New York has the most with 16 and California is next with 9.
- Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania each have 4.
