The Paul Taylor Dance Company is moving to the Lower East Side. The company, which has lost its lease on its SoHo home of 20 years, said it had found new quarters in a Grand Street auditorium that belongs to the East River Houses, a cooperative complex.

Artist Community added as New Funding Category at NEA

In a letter to colleagues on November 12, 2008, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman, Dana Gioia, announced a new funding category for Artist Communities. He states "...on October 31st the NEA’s National Council on the Arts approved the creation of a new field designation for Artist Communities...Beginning this January, standing proudly along the fields of Music, Dance, Theater, Opera, Visual Arts, and Literature will be the new, and distinct, designation of Artist Communities.

City's New Arts 'czar' Rules a Tottering Empire

The city's new arts czar chuckled in a hearty, if mildly wistful, way.

Just six weeks into his job in the newly constituted and robustly labeled Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Steuer maintains a sense of humor in the face of metastasizing challenges.

Arts Institutions Face Financial Distress

Facing financial disaster, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art is seeking large cash gifts from donors, according to the museum’s director, Jeremy Strick, who is not ruling out the possibility of sharing the museum’s collection of nearly 6,000 artworks or merging with another institution, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Financial Crisis will Kill Nonprofits
Cuts in government spending and dwindling donations provide a double whammy for many agencies.

At least 100,000 nonprofits nationwide will be forced to close their doors in the next two years as a result of the financial crisis, according to Paul Light, professor of public service at New York University.

The dire prediction was made Wednesday at a forum on the impact of the crisis on nonprofits and social service delivery in New York City.

The financial crisis is already resulting in a steep drop in funding for these organizations, forcing them to cut their budgets, and eliminate staff and programs.
