Government Affairs Update - Arts and Health Care

Health Care Reform and Nonprofit Organizations

Dance/USA, in coalition with the Performing Arts Alliance, is tracking the health care reform proposals in an effort to understand how the proposed changes will affect dance organizations. Independent Sector, an advocacy organization representing the nonprofit field, has submitted a letter to the Senate Finance Committee asking that nonprofit organizations receive equal incentives to for-profit businesses to provide healthcare for employees.

In addition, for dance companies seeking to understand the many health care proposals, Kaiser Permanente has put together a side-by-side comparison chart: http://www.kff.org/healthreform/sidebyside.cfm and Speaker Pelosi’s office has released a two-page summary on health care reform and small businesses.

Arts in Health Care Proposals

Dance/USA has signed onto proposals submitted to key Senate staff supporting the inclusion of the arts in healthcare. Arts in health care is a diverse field representing over 16,000 medical, arts, and creative arts therapy professionals dedicated to enhancing the healthcare experiences for patients, families and caregivers through activities that reduce their experience of pain and increase their ability to communicate emotions, to measurable therapeutic outcomes. This rapidly growing field integrates the arts, including literary, performing, music, visual and design into a wide variety of health care and community settings for therapeutic, educational and expressive purposes.
