National Endowment for the Arts Underwrites Fees and Lodging for Annual Conference

Dear Dance/USA Member,

Dance/USA has just received special support totaling $20,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts to encourage more participation at our 2009 Annual Conference in Houston, TX, June 3-6. We are grateful for their quick response in this time of urgent need.

I am pleased to announce that Dance/USA is able to offer a limited number of stipends (approximately 28) for Conference registration and lodging (equates to roughly $700 per person) to assist Dance/USA members who would like to attend. In these financially challenging times, it is more important than ever before to connect to the field and to learn from each other, and I hope these funds will help.

Given the short turnaround time to announce this offer, receive applications, notify recipients, and confirm logistics, the stipends will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. A wait-list will be developed should additional funds be available.

Some policies concerning the stipend:

  • Each stipend may be used to subsidize the costs incurred in sending one person from a Dance/USA member organization or individual Dance/USA member to the Conference.
  • The stipend covers conference registration fees and a required three-night stay in the Dance/USA Conference hotel, the Hyatt Regency Houston. (Dance/USA must meet a room-night minimum.)
  • Travel costs will not be included in the stipend; we expect that participants who receive this support will be able to cover their own transportation.

To request a Conference stipend, please follow this link to complete a brief submission form. The link will be open starting May 1, 2009 at 12:00 PM EST and remain open until all funds are expended. Confirmation of stipend support will be made as soon as possible and no later than mid-May. If you receive a stipend, Dance/USA will provide a conference code for your registration and will confirm hotel logistics.

The Honor System: While I am delighted that Dance/USA can offer this support, let me make one special request. If you have already set aside funds or received support to attend, please consider not applying for a stipend, as this will enable another colleague to come to Houston. I know it is a lot to ask at this time, but the colleagues you will assist will be extremely grateful for your generosity, and everyone's Conference experience will be enhanced.

I look forward to seeing you in Houston!

Yours sincerely,

Andrea Snyder

Network and Nourish… NOW!

There are dozens of practical, business-minded reasons to attend the 2009 Dance/USA Annual Conference, but as every arts professional knows it is the intangibles – networking with specialists and peers; that ‘aha’ moment of hearing another ‘speak your truth’ - that often have the most impact. How do you put a price on being inspired by the spirit-in-action of Jawole Willa Jo Zollar of the Urban Bush Women (Morning Plenary Panelist, Saturday, June 6 - A Sustainable Future: Cultivating the dance-literate population we all dream of)? The transformation of the intangible to the practical has already begun on the ground in the Houston dance community!

“This hosting experience has been an amazing opportunity for our community to pull together,” exclaims Dance Houston founder and director Andrea Cody of the Houston Host Committee, which has come together to build an exciting array of showcases and activities to complement your conference experience. In addition, the Committee succeeded in securing funding from local businesses to underwrite the registration fees of 22 Texas dance professionals. “I've always thought we had a very cohesive, supportive community, and now it's better than ever. ”

Not only has the act of coming together for common purpose forged a strengthened of community, but they have been able to transform their unity into funding to help their local colleagues attend the Conference!

Now comes the exciting news that the National Endowment for the Arts has provided $20,000 dollars in special support to be used to underwrite the full conference participation - registration fees and three conference hotel nights - for about two dozen attendees from across the U.S. (see lead article). There’s no reason for you to miss out on the ‘intangibles.’ After all, the most potent new weapons you will add to your arsenal may be the new relationships that you forge from just being there!
