Dance/USA Receives $1 Million from The James Irvine Foundation for Continued Support for California Dance Artists
Washington, DC — Dance/USA has received a $1 million grant from The James Irvine Foundation to conduct "Dance: Creation to Performance" — a regranting program that will award 11 or more grants totaling $225,000 annually for three consecutive years. This marks the third grant for the multi-year initiative under the Irvine Dance in California Program, created to foster artistic excellence and advance choreographic development in the California dance community.
The Irvine Dance in California Program, having previously funded 54 dance makers through the Irvine Fellowships in Dance and the California DanceMaker Grants, now launches "Dance: Creation to Performance," designed to support the development and public sharing of new or traditional dance work. Artists will be chosen based on their artistic talent and potential and the vision for the proposed new work, in relationship with their overall artistic goals.
"Dance: Creation to Performance" will yield a minimum of 11 grants per year, in amounts of $20,000, $15,000, $10,000 and $5,000 each year for three consecutive years. Grant amounts will be awarded at the discretion of the selection panel, considering the needs of the artists, their other resources and the purpose and scope of their projects. Eligible artists will submit applications for open, competitive review. Grant recipients will be identified through a two-tiered application review system. Panels will be comprised of national and regional specialists in the dance field. Guidelines will be available online at www.danceusa.org, and in hardcopy from the Los Angeles program office in January, 2004. The deadline for the submission of applications will be in April.
"The expansion of this program will provide much needed funding to individual choreographers for the creation of new work and will heighten public awareness of an important group of dance leaders in the state," comments Dance/USA executive director Andrea Snyder. "The Irvine Dance in California Program is an instrumental model for improving dance artistry. We are proud to serve as its administrator and to continue our relationship with The James Irvine Foundation for the support of dance artists in California."

With assets of $1.2 billion, the Foundation expects to make grants of $56 million in 2004 for the people of California.
Dance/USA
