Dance/USA Awards 13 Scholarships to National Roundtable - Scholarships launch “Access Dance/USA,” a pilot program aimed at engaging financially challenged organizations

Dance/USA , the national service organization for professional dance, announces the selection of 13 companies and individuals from the Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul and San Francisco communities who have received Access Dance/USA scholarships to attend the 2006 National Roundtable being held in Portland, Oregon, June 21-24.

DANCE/MetroDC FINDS DIRECTION - Johanna Seltzer, Local Dance Director and Arts Advocate, Assumes the Helm of New Dance Service Organization

Dance/USA announced today that Johanna Seltzer has been selected to be the Project Director of Dance/MetroDC, a new local dance service organization. A program of Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance, Dance/MetroDC will focus specifically on the needs of those creating dance and dance audiences in the District, Maryland and Virginia.

Dance/USA, the national service organization for professional dance, announced that it will receive an initial $50,000 grant from the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation to launch a service provider for the Washington, DC metro area.

Dance/USA and the James Irvine Foundation have announced the first year of Dance: Creation to Performance (DCP) awards, ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 each to 18 California-based dance artists, to support the creation and public sharing of new work.

Four 20th century choreographers who left a profound mark on the language of dance Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille and Martha Graham will be honored by the U.S. Postal Service with commemorative postage stamps. The first-day-of-issue ceremony is scheduled for 10 am, Tuesday, May 4, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s Victoria Theater, One Center St., Newark, NJ.

The French Cultural Counselor Jean-René Gehan announced a $2 million FrenchAmerican program to promote contemporary dance. This Dance Partnership will foster dialogue and exchange between dance professionals from the United States and France, focusing on artists and works that have not yet been presented in the partner country.

Samuel Miller has resigned as executive director of the New England Foundation for the Arts, effective June 1, 2004, to accept a new position as president of Leveraging Investments in Creativity.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a $1.25 million grant to the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance.

- Alan M. (“Mike”) Kriegsman Honored: A Special Dance/USA Trustees Award Will Be Presented to Pulitzer-Winning Washington Post Dance Critic at 2004 National Roundtable In Pittsburgh (February 17, 2004)
Dance/USA announces the newly created Dance/USA Trustees Award to be presented to Alan M. (“Mike”) Kriegsman, Critic Emeritus to the Washington Post. The Award will be presented on Thursday, June 10, 2004 during the Dance/USA Honors Celebration Dinner.

Dance/USA has selected Arthur Mitchell and Sage Cowles as the respective recipients of its 2004 Honors and “Ernie,” both to be presented on Thursday, June 10, 2004, during the Dance/USA Honors Celebration Dinner.

The City of Boston, Boston Ballet, and Clear Channel Enterntainment have jointly reached a plan that provides a home for Boston Ballet’s The Nutcracker for the next four years.
- Kent Stowell and Francia Russell to Retire from Pacific Northwest Ballet in 2005 (February 15, 2004)
After almost 27 years with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Artistic Directors Kent Stowell and Francia Russell will retire in June 2005, at the end of the 20042005 season. Stowell and Russell made the announcement at the February 11 Board of Trustees meeting.
